1. Aspirins
deaden pain and so bring relief, but y taking them indiscriminately; there is a
possible risk that more serious medical symptoms will go unnoticed as the pain
dies down.
2. Aspirins
are not a cure. They are painkillers, and should be treated as such.
3. If you
have any persistent ache or pain, you should seek medical advices to find the cause,
rather than dose yourself with aspirins. Doctors agree that aspirins are
invaluable for the relief of headaches, menstruation pains and cold symptoms.
Without aspirins, they say, their Monday morning surgeries would be even more packed
with patients. The only provision is that they urge caution when taking them.
4. Some elderly
people take aspirins night and morning habitually – which could be dangerous
unless done under medical supervision. This is because aspirin is acetyl-salicylic
acid, which can irritate the lining of the stomach and causes slight internal
bleeding. That does not mean that every time you take an aspirin you lose a few
drops of blood, as some people believe. There is the risk though, that
prolonged dosage will cause bleeding.
5. “Nobody
should take more than three aspirins at a time.” Never take more than six in
one day unless on medical advice.
6. The best
way to take aspirins, and thus minimize their effect on the stomach, is either
crushed in water or during meal. However, people with stomach ulcers or tummy
upsets should avoid them altogether because of the risk of internal bleeding.
7. Like all
drugs, they should certainly be keep out of the reach of children. Should a
child swallow one or two aspirins, you should try to make him sick, either by
sticking your fingers at the back of his throat or giving him salty water to
drink. When a larger amount of aspirin is swallowed, it might be necessary for
his stomach to be washed out.
8. Aspirins
can kill, though people who take them intending to commit suicide may fail
because big overdose are sometimes rejected by stomach. At an inquest on a
woman who died of aspirin poisoning, the pathologist said that five tablets
could be regarded as a “dangerous dose.”
9. Apart
from killing pain, aspirins reduce inflammation and therefore are invaluable in
the treatment of rheumatism. Nevertheless, rheumatism sufferers should consult
their doctors before taking daily dose. The medical world agrees however that
it is one of the “miracle pill of our time.”
10. Today
salicylic acid, the chief ingredient in aspirin, is made synthetically out of a
mixture of phenol and caustic soda which is dried in a rotating ball mill with added
carbon dioxide.
