1. Talk all
you want during a meal, but keep quite during the presentation. It’s rude to
interrupt a guest speaker.
2. Banquets
rarely allow enough room for everyone to sit comfortable. So keep your elbows
in as if they were taped to your ribs. Women should put large purses on the floor
between their feet.
3. Begin
eating when the head table and a few people around you have been served.
4. If the
person next to you eats your salad or drinks your coffee, quietly ask the
waitress for another.
5. If you
don’t want coffee, you may ask for tea or milk, if you prefer.
6. If you
spill something, don’t fuss. It will make everyone uncomfortable.
7. If
relishes, rolls or butter are in front of you, start passing them.
8. If no
bread plate is handy, use the edge of your salad or dinner plate for your roll
and butter.
9. Ash trays
are for ashes…plates are for food. If no ash trays are hand, don’t smoke.
10. Don’t
leave silverware in coffee cups, salad bowls or dessert dishes. Leave utensils
on the dinner plate or saucer.
11. If you
find lipstick on your cup or egg on a fork, ask quietly for a replacement.
12. At a
family-style dinner, pass all dishes the same way around the table – either direction
is all right.
13. If you
haven’t gotten enough to eat, don’t complain. Pick up a sandwich on the way
home.
14. Above all, remember that a banquet is an
occasion of honor for a person or an organization.
